CPT and HCPCS Medical Codes

The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set is maintained by the American Medical Association.

The CPT code set accurately describes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services and is designed to communicate uniform information about medical services and procedures among physicians, coders, patients, accreditation organizations, and payers for administrative, financial, and analytical purposes.

The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS - "Hicks-picks") is a set of health care procedure codes based on the current CPT codes.

These codes are necessary (and mandatory) for Medicare, Medicaid, and other health insurance programs to hemp make sure that insurance claims are processed in a consistent manner.
